Insurance, MedPay, UIM, and Attorney/Third-Party Liens

We do not bill your regular health insurance for accident-related care. We bill third-party auto insurance, MedPay, or your UIM coverage instead, depending on your situation.

Third-Party Insurance (the other driver’s policy)

• What it is: The at-fault driver’s liability coverage.

• Reality check: That insurer’s job is to protect their driver, not you, so delays or low offers are common.
• Example: If you’re rear-ended and the other driver has $50,000 in bodily injury coverage, that is typically the maximum their insurer will pay for your injuries.

Medical Payments Coverage (MedPay)

• What it is: A benefit on your own auto policy.
• What it does: Pays accident-related medical bills for you and your passengers right away, regardless of fault.
• Why it helps: It is quick and no-fault, so you don’t have to wait for liability to be decided.
• Example: ER visits, imaging, chiropractic, and physical therapy can be billed to MedPay immediately.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UIM)

• What it is: Protection on your policy if the at-fault driver has no insurance (uninsured) or too little insurance (underinsured).
• What it does: After the other driver’s policy is used up (or if there isn’t one), your UIM can help cover medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering, up to your policy limits.
• Timing: UIM usually applies later, after the claim against the at-fault driver is resolved.
• Example: If your medical bills are $75,000 and the other driver has $25,000 in liability coverage, your UIM can help cover the remaining $50,000, subject to your limits.
